Club Penguin is a massively multiplayer online role play game designed for children aged 6 to 14. Created by Disney, the website offers a range of games set in a wintry virtual world where each player is represented by a penguin avatar. Although some of Club Penguins features are accessible free of charge, paid memberships which offer unrestricted access to the site's features are also available.

By playing mini games such as 'Cart Surfer', 'Puffle Rescue' and 'Astro Barrier', Club Penguin users earn virtual coins which they can spend on items to personalize their penguin and its surroundings. The in-game currency can also be used to buy a pet 'puffle': a virtual creature which the owner must look after to prevent it from running away.

Club Penguin: What makes it different?

Club Penguin offers a unique filtered chat system which allows users from around the world to communicate with one another whilst playing the game in a safe, controlled environment. Parents of players are encouraged to supervise their children whilst they navigate around the site, and there are two main chat modes to chose from: Ultimate Safe Chat and Standard Safe Chat. Both systems are moderated carefully but the former only permits users to select what they want to say from a list of pre-established options.

Another unique feature of the site is the map system, which divides the Club Penguin environment into various regions which members can visit to interact with other users and play a variety of mini-games. Each user is also assigned a personal igloo which acts as their penguin's home. They may personalize this using goods purchased with coins earned from successful game-playing.

The massively multiplayer nature of Club Penguin means there are also many multiplayer activities which users can participate in, as well as a website newsletter called 'The Club Penguin Times' which gives information on game updates, upcoming events and questions answered by the resident 'Arctic Aunt'.

Club Penguin vs. primary competitors (sites similar to Club Penguin)

Moshi Monsters is one of Club Penguin's main competitors, and is based around a scenario where the user adopts a pet monster and uses 'rox' (the in-game currency) to buy various items for it - ranging from clothes to food products. Moshi Monsters' selection of games isn't as wide and varied as that offered by Club Penguin, nor are there as many items available for purchase, but the chat system is just as well moderated and many of the mini-games are of educational value, often demanding counting and problem-solving skills of the user.

Neopets is another of Club Penguin's main rivals, set in a fantasy world called 'Neopia' where users raise virtual pets, interact with one another and play games to earn 'Neopoints'. Like Club Penguin and Moshi Monsters, Neopets is of educational value and boasts a wide selection of puzzle games which players compete in to earn the in-game currency, which they can in-turn spend on items to customize their 'Neohomes' with. One advantage of Neopets is that there are numerous plots to keep the game unique and interesting. However, some complaints have been made over the account 'freezing' system employed by the site, with users complaining that other users report them for no real reason and they are then suspended by the website moderators without thorough investigation.

Club Penguin: Pricing & packages

Although some of the site's features are free for all users, membership is required for unlimited access to all of the games, activities and events on Club Penguin. For instance, only paid members can purchase and customize their new igloos, host parties and events, access priority servers and games and visit exclusive 'member-only' areas of the virtual Club Penguin world.

Memberships start at $7.95 per month, but savings can be made on six-monthly or yearly subscriptions, which are priced at $39.95 and $59.95 respectively. Membership cards can be bought as gifts in-store and then activated online, although the website provides a secure online payment system via credit card, PayPal or bank transfer, depending on which method you prefer.

Neopets is similarly priced to Club Penguin at $7.95 per month, whilst Moshi Monsters is slightly less expensive at $5.95 for one month's access. Both also have six-monthly and yearly memberships available for purchase, and also allow players to join for free for limited feature access in a similar way to Club Penguin.

Club Penguin: Customer reviews & comments

Club Penguin has been described as an 'enjoyable introduction to virtual worlds' for 6 to 14 year olds, with many users complimenting the Ultimate Safe Chat system, which provides players with extra protection in comparison to most other massively multiplayer role play websites in today's world. Parents appreciate the numerous parental controls which make Club Penguin a secure environment for users to play in, although many feel as though only paid members can get the most out of the platform and all that it has to offer.

The countless games and activities which can be played at Club Penguin have also been singled out for praise, with many parents regarding them as both educational and enjoyable. The site itself is considered to have a user-friendly, 'colorful and creative' layout which appeals to young people and encourages them to participate in and contribute to the Club Penguin community.

Great review. I think the game is pretty expensive for what it offers.

Ranked #12 in

Thank you very much! Agreed, it's quite expensive for what it actually offers, but there's quite a lot of fun to be had just using the free features!
